China vows to stabilize prices, prevent price hikes

The Chinese government Wednesday took measures to stabilize market prices and increase the severity of punishments for those found guilty of driving up prices through hoarding or cheating.

The action is designed to safeguard consumers' interests and was implemented at a State Council executive meeting headed by Premier Wen Jiabao.

China Awards Top Science Prize

China granted its State Scientific and Technological Award for 2007 on Tuesday.

Chinese president Hu Jintao presented the 5 million yuan (about 600,000 U.S. dollars) awards at the Great Hall of the People which encourages the innovative capabilities of a national strategic priority.

China Eastern stake sale rejected

China Eastern Airline shareholders Tuesday rejected selling a 24 percent stake at HK$3.8 per share to Singapore Airlines and Temasek Holdings.

Around 77.6 percent of China Eastern’s shareholders rejected the proposed sale.

Singapore Airlines (SIA) quickly expressed its disappointment over the shareholders' rejection of its investment in China Eastern Airlines (CEA).

Imported from China, UK builds recyclable hotel

A British budget hotel chain operator Travelodge is building what it says the first recyclable hotel. It is constructed from pre-built, container-like crates imported from China. The steel modules could be dismantled at the end of the 120-room hotel’s life if necessary.

Brazil police recover stolen Picasso, Portinari

Brazilian police Tuesday recovered two valuable paintings that were stolen last month from the Sao Paulo Museum of Art and have made two arrests. The two canvasses are "Portrait of Suzanne Bloch" by Pablo Picasso and "The Coffee Worker" by Brazil's Candido Portinari.
