Majestic Edinburgh
Built on seven hills, Edinburgh is truly majestic. Its skyline has been painted and photographed many times. Classical buildings contrast with medieval houses and create a setting that is deserving of a world heritage site. It is steeped in history, offers cultural activities galore and is an all round visual delight.

Festivals
Mention the word  'festival' and Edinburgh springs to mind. Edinburgh's festivals are world renowned, the highlight of the cultural year being the Edinburgh International Festival. A three week event, this is the largest arts festival in the world. The innovative Festival Fringe and International Film Festival run concurrently with the main festival. Other popular festivals are the Military Tattoo, International TV festival, International Jazz Festival, Book Festival, Folk Festival and Science Festival. Festivals to please all interests!

World leader
Edinburgh is a leading research centre in medicine, biotechnology and artificial intelligence. It is also a major player in the financial world. The city's universities are renowned for offering high quality education. Alumni from Edinburgh University form an impressive list: Gordon Brown, British Chancellor of the Exchequer; Robin Cook, former Foreign Secretary; Alexander Graham Bell, inventor of the telephone; Robin Milner, computer scientist; Stella Rimington, former head of MI5 and J.M. Barrie, children's author.

Sporting Edinburgh
Edinburgh boasts 17 sports centres, the world's largest indoor climbing arena and Scotland's national rugby stadium, Murrayfield. The surrounding countryside is easily accessible for walking, running and cycling.

Films
The city has become a popular venue for making films. Trainspotting (1996), Shallow Grave (1994), Women Talking Dirty (1999), The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie (1969) and Great Expectations (1998) were all shot or set in Edinburgh.

Lots to offer
Edinburgh is a city with everything on its doorstep. Anusha Le Vasan is a student from Malaysia. She likes the fact that anything is possible in Edinburgh. 'I like the fact that you can do all kinds of things. Everything from music and culture to the gym and the countryside and hills are easily accessible. I have just started learning a form of Brazilian martial arts called Capoeira. My friends who live in other parts of the UK are really impressed that I can find this sort of thing.'

Try it and see!
