In 1980, the world's democratically elected female president took office in Iceland. Iceland's ambassador to China, Kristin Arnadottir, said that election was encouraging to women in her country and hopefully to women around the world. "Women in Iceland are very independent. They are strong," Arnadottir said. "Iceland is proud of milestones in our history that have significance for the rest of the world."
