这句话源自17世纪，而且在英国出现的频率比美国大。这也许是因为英国人比较喜欢吃布丁的缘故。它的字面意思是“布丁味道怎么样，吃了才知道”，引申一下就是“事实胜于雄辩”、“眼见为实”。

后来，也许是人们变懒了，这句话又演变出了更简短的说法，如“the proof is in the pudding”和“proof of the pudding”。
