Kayla Martell, 21, has been suffering from a disease her entire life. The illness, alopecia areate, has caused complete baldness.
Martell hasn't let her hair loss hold her back from competing in beauty pageants, sometimes with a win and other times without one.
This time, she chose a blond wig and beat out 15 other women, all with full heads of hair, to take home the Miss Delaware 2010 title in the Miss America Pageant.
"Yes, this was my fifth time competing," Martell told "Fox & Friends" on Wednesday morning.
"I competed with the wig this time. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made and, as you know, (talking to Gretchen Carlson, a former pageant winner) Miss America needs to be relatable and approachable, and I think that helped me to fit the needs of the job," Martell said.
She later added, "I think every contestant just wants to be judged on their character and judged by the ability to perform the duties of the job of Miss America, and I hope that the judges can focus on what I have to offer for the program and what I can bring to the table for Miss America."
Alopecia areata is an autoimmune disease that often beings in childhood. It affects more than 4.7 million people in the United States.
There is currently no cure for this illness.
Martell told Carlson, "I hope to show people that beauty comes in all different kinds of packages. No beauty Queen should fit into a box and look like a Barbie every time that they wake up."
