口语君：上次陶小德告诉戴可儿他假期去参观了兵马俑。此行，他听说了哪些奇闻异事呢？

F: What was your favorite part?

你最喜欢展览的哪部分？

M: I always like to hear the story of their discovery. It was pure dumb luck!

我总是很爱听他们发现古迹的故事。这事纯属巧合！

F: What do you mean?

啥意思？

M: Nobody knew there were thousands of life-size warriors buried there before 1974. Then a farmer was digging a well and he found a general's head made of clay. The discovery was an amazing accident.

1974年以前，根本没人知道有上千个真人大小的兵马俑被埋在那里。后来，有个农民在那儿打井，结果发现了一个陶土制的将军的头。这一发现纯属偶然。


[口语点睛]

口语君：dumb作形容词有哑的、无声的意思。但dumb luck却与"哑"毫不相干，它是一种非正式用法，常用于口语中，指"发生了意想不到的好事，尤指这事本不会发生"。例如：It was just dumb luck that we found the place at all. (我们发现了那个地方纯属巧合。)又如：

A: How come hurt locker won Oscars?

拆弹部队那种片子怎么能获奥斯卡奖呢？

口语君：看来古迹发掘过程中有不少故事呢！除了兵马俑，还有什么其他发现呢？下面就让我们边学边把口语练起来！

1. Excavation in 1976 revealed two further pits both filled with terracotta warriors.

在1976年的发掘中，人们又发现了两个埋满兵马俑的坑穴。

2. Since then discoveries have continued to be made at the site. To date, four pits have been excavated.

自那以后，考古现场不断有新的发现。迄今为止，已有4个坑穴被挖掘。

3. Three are filled with the terra-cotta soldiers, horse-drawn chariots, and weapons. The fourth pit is empty, a testament to the original unfinished construction.

4. Archaeologists estimate the pits may contain as many as 8,000 figures, but the total may never be known.
