Ten years of training. One last point.
Hi, I'm Dr Greg Wells. If you think beach volleyball is nothing but fun in the sun - you'd be wrong. It's a fast and intense sport. During a match, athletes will sweat up to an astonishing 1.4 LITRES of fluids. Dehydration is a big issue. It can cause muscles to flame out and fail, so managing internal heat is crucial -and beach players do it in the coolest of ways. They increase their skins' capillarisation, which means they literally grow more blood vessels. This lets them shuttle heat away from the working muscles, and send it out to the skin -where sweat evaporates to cool the body. They mutate their bodies to beat the heat. It's like a chameleon changing colour to protect itself from predators.
Plus the speed is ridiculous! The time between when the ball is spiked to when they respond is almost instantaneous. The brain is collecting data on player position, wind, and how the attacker's arm is swinging. All this data is processed by the Parietal and Temporal lobes of the brain. They warn the frontal cortex. Signals fly through the nervous system at 70 metres per second.
Cool down adaptation... And lightning fast reaction times. That's how you spike to gold!
