Two flamingos spar at the Smithsonian's National Zoo in Washington February 8, 2008. The American flamingos begin their elaborate courtship displays around Valentine's Day each year. The whole flock participates as birds puff up their feathers, hold their heads high and slowly strut together, reminiscent of a Broadway chorus line. The behaviour synchronizes the flock so that the birds breed and lay eggs at the same time, assuring future chicks will hatch when food supply is optimal. (Agencies) |
