Before I start, I will have to say it is way, waaaay different in China than in the Western world. Yes, there are some similarities, but anyway who has been to China, including me, would tell you that it is different.

不过,大多数中国人对国外中餐意见还蛮大,在Quora的问答中,很多中国网友认为美国的中餐口味太重,种类单调……
Most of the Chinese dishes served by a majority (not all) of American Chinese restaurants have too much sauce, too much meat to vegetable ratio, overcooked vegetables, overcooked meats and often are incorrectly spiced.

这道菜似乎已成了外国人眼中的中餐代表。
这是道什么样的菜呢?维基百科称:
General Tso's chicken is a sweet, piquant, deep-fried chicken dish that is served in North American Chinese restaurants. The dish is named after Zuo Zongtang, a Qing dynasty statesman and military leader, although there is no recorded connection to him nor is the dish known in Hunan, Zuo's home province.
左宗棠鸡是一道甜辣口味的炸鸡菜肴,在北美中餐馆里较为多见。该菜以清朝政治家、将军左宗棠命名,虽然没有史料证明这道菜与他或者他的故乡湖南有关。
据澎湃新闻报道,左宗棠鸡,也称左公鸡。1952年由中国台湾的湘菜名厨彭长贵创制,当时并没有正式菜名。
彭长贵
据说,这道菜之所以托名左宗棠,源自上世纪70年代。某日蒋经国办公到深夜后,带随从到彭长贵开设的彭园餐厅用餐,但餐厅当日的高档食材都已用尽,准备打烊,只剩鸡腿稍称堪用。
彭长贵于是将鸡腿去骨切丁,又将辣椒去籽切段,先炸熟鸡块沥干,然后以辣椒、鸡块、酱油、醋、蒜末、姜末、葱末拌炒均匀,最后勾芡并淋麻油,即成一道新菜色。
蒋经国品尝后,觉得相当美味,询问菜名,彭长贵随机应变,说是清末湘军名将左宗棠当年爱吃的一道炒鸡块,因而得名。
1973年,彭长贵赴美国开办彭园餐厅。美国前国务卿基辛格在彭园宴客,吃过“左宗棠鸡”后赞不绝口。此事经《华盛顿邮报》、《纽约时报》等媒体大幅报道,这道菜因而名气大震,逐渐成为美国人眼里中餐“第一菜”。
除左宗棠鸡外,还有一种只有在国外才能见到的神奇中餐食品,“fortune cookie”(幸运饼干)……
几乎美国所有的中餐馆都会在餐后发一小袋这样的小饼干。
烘成金黄色的元宝状脆甜小点心,空心的,咬开后,会发现里面藏着一张小小的签语。
有的是祝愿:
你天生丽质魅力四射必能让人动心。
有的是心灵鸡汤……
上帝关上一扇门,又会打开另一扇。
有的是预言:
你马上将走上人生巅峰。
A fortune cookie is a crisp cookie usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and sesame seed oil with a piece of paper inside, a "fortune", on which is an aphorism, or a vague prophecy.
幸运饼干是一种脆脆的小饼,由面粉、糖、香草、麻油制成,饼里藏着一张“幸运”字条,上面写着格言或预言。
关于这种算命小饼的来源,有一种考据是它源于日本,由日本移民带进美国。
二战期间,发生了日裔美国人遭囚禁事件,超过10万名日裔美国人被关在拘留营,包括很多幸运饼干生产商,所以给了华裔生产者一个良机。
久而久之,fortune cookie就成了美国中餐馆的一种特有文化。还有不少美国人喜欢收集这些幸运签。
吃一顿饭顺便算个命,确实很有乐趣呢。
