“陆止于此，海始于斯”，葡萄牙“诗魂”卡蒙斯世代传颂的名句生动描绘出他的祖国所处优越地理位置。

路易•德•卡蒙斯出生于葡萄牙北部查韦斯地区，葡萄牙著名诗人，以文学成就而被尊称为葡萄牙国父。他写了众多诗歌和剧作，他最著名的作品是史诗《路济塔尼亚人之歌》（Os Lusíadas，又称《葡国魂》）。“陆止于此，海始于斯”就是出自这部作品。

太平洋岛国（Pacific island countries）指南太平洋地区完全由岛屿组成的一些国家，其中斐济（Fiji）、萨摩亚（Samoa）、巴布亚新几内亚（Papua New Guinea）、瓦努阿图（Vanuatu）、密克罗尼西亚联邦（Federated States of Micronesia）、库克群岛（Cook Islands）、汤加（the Kingdom of Tonga）和纽埃（Niue）等8个岛国与中国建立了外交关系。

这一条谚语的出处，汤加王国（the Kingdom of Tonga），位于太平洋西南部赤道附近，是由173个岛屿组成的岛国，其中36个有人居住，大部分为珊瑚岛。
