About UK Pavilion and The Dandelion exhibition
For its pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, the UK dared to be different with a bold statement about British design, construction, invention and engineering.
The Dandelion, as it was nicknamed, captured the imagination of millions of Expo visitors and people across the globe. With its outstanding creativity, splendor as well as courage, the UK pavilion won the Winner of Expo’s Gold Award and the Lubetkin Prize, awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architecture to the most outstanding work of international architecture.
As a part of the UK's Expo Legacy programme, this exhibition is curated and project managed by the British Council in collaboration with UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) and the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) and sponsored by Virgin Atlantic. It tells the story of the making of this unique pavilion, from the initial idea, through development and experimentation, to the construction and short life of the building. It illustrates the conviction, dedication and risk-taking required to create something truly innovative.
The contents of the exhibition are various and creative. It will unveil the mystery of this “seed cathedral” and discover the secrets of the “seeds” hidden behind. The making and installation of those acrylic rods and the wonder of the three walkways of “green city”, “open city” and “living city” will also be revealed.
This is an exhibition with remarkable significance. An accompanied publication DANDELION: THE MAKING OF THE UK PAVILION AT SHANGHAI WORLD EXPO 2010 will also have its debut followed. Therefore, to take this opportunity, the Cultural and Education Section of British Consulate General sincerely invite the government officials, business leaders as well as the general public to be engaged in and jointly witness this story of UK innovation and creative energy.
