谷歌要建数字图书馆的事情在今年引起了不少争议。有人支持,说是方便阅读和搜索,是好事;有人反对,说是侵犯版权,对作者不公平。争议归争议,人家谷歌早就着手开始扫描书籍了,不过据说是从orphan book(孤儿书)开始的。
Orphan books refer to volumes still in copyright but out of print and unavailable for sale, and whose copyright holders cannot be found. Rose in 2007 but peaked this year with the fierce discussion over the proposed Google Books settlement.
“孤儿书”(orphan book)指那些找不到版权持有者且已经不再出版和销售的书籍。这个表达出现于2007年,但在2009年因为谷歌图书事件而成为热议的话题。
Google has been scanning the pages of those books and others as part of its plan to bring a digital library and bookstore, unprecedented in scope, to computer screens across the United States.
作为其建立数字图书馆和书店计划的一部分,谷歌已经开始扫描这些“孤儿书”和其他书籍,该计划规模史无前例,意欲遍及全美。
