前情提要：在道林离开希贝儿后，已怀有身孕的希贝尔投河自尽了。当道林受到良心谴责而痛苦万分时，亨利及时出现，并用他的魔鬼哲学让道林重新恢复平静。从此道林彻底抛开了自己的道德感和良知，纵情于各种肉体的刺激和享受。时间一天天流逝，道林的画像逐渐变得狰狞恐怖，而道林本人却依旧拥有完美的容颜。在巴兹尔发现那幅扭曲可怕的画像后，道林还残忍地将他杀害，并远走他乡。
本片段剧情：二十五年后，道林回到故地，当众人在聚会上见到他一如当年的俊美面容时，都惊讶得说不出话来。亨利的女儿艾米丽也已经长成大姑娘，并对道林产生了浓厚的兴趣，但此时的道林，已不复是当年的那个纯真少年……

1. play the cynic：作出一副愤世嫉俗的样子。play在这里是“装扮，装得像……”的意思。例如：She likes to play the great lady.（她喜欢装成贵妇人的样子。）
