《圣经》语：人生于尘土，死后亦归于尘土。尘土，原来是死亡的方向。

俚语“bite the dust”（字面意：吃地上的尘土），指的是“死亡”。不过，用时可要小心，它常用来指“（坏蛋）完蛋/倒毙”。朋友家人去世时，千万不要用这一说法。

“Bite the dust”语出荷马史诗《伊利亚特》。特洛伊战争长达十年之久，留给后人的短语在数百个十年后依然不绝于耳。《伊利亚特》中，荷马在描述将士们坠马倒地的惨状时，用了短语“bite the dust”（面朝下，嘴巴里满是尘土）。

到了20世纪30年代，美国因盛行西部牛仔片，短语“bite the dust”曾一度成为银屏妙语，用来形容匪徒失败、完蛋。看下面一个例句：

The spy bit the dust at the end of the book. （在书中，间谍最终以失败告终。）

俗语：前功尽弃，重新开始
