Soccer. The beautiful game. But physical poetry isn't always as pretty as it looks.
Hi, I'm Dr Greg Wells. Olympic soccer players face an astounding number of physical demands. During a 90 minute match they'll run the equivalent of 10km, often at a full speed sprint. But then, at any time, they have to forget their fatigue and tap into fine motor skills to execute a precise shot. And ideally, score!
Here's how. Soccer players utilize a sequence called the kinetic chain. It's a powerful body snap releasing targeted energy. First, a player plants their foot, then they transfer energy through the body's segments in sequence, until the power reaches the opposite foot. This whips the kicking leg through, unleashing a precise shot that's wickedly fast.
Scoring in soccer is all about precision, and that depends upon your body's ability to supply your muscles with enough energy. Running and sprinting don't leave a lot left over for skills, so how do they stay powered up?
Training stimulates an athlete's DNA to produce more and stronger mitochondria. Mitochondria are tiny structures inside our muscle cells. They're energy powerhouses that fuel every move we make.
