Most words ending in an unstressed -our in British English, end in -or in American English. Wherever the vowel is unreduced in pronunciation, the spelling is the same everywhere.
英式英语中大多数以不重读的our结尾的英语单词,在美式英语中以or结尾。如果这个元音组合(our)重读了,那么,英美的拼写都是相同的。
In the early 18th century, English spelling was not standardized. Differences became noticeable after the publishing of influential dictionaries. Today's British English spellings mostly follow Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language 1755, while many American English spellings follow Webster's An American Dictionary of the English Language. Webster's 1828 dictionary had only -or and is given much of the credit for the adoption of this form in the United States. By contrast, Johnson's 1755 dictionary used -our for all words still so spelled in Britain. Most words of this kind came from Latin, where the ending was spelled -or.
After the Norman conquest of England, the ending became -our to match the Old French spelling. After the Renaissance, new borrowings from Latin were taken up with their original -or ending, and many words once ending in -our, for example, chancellour and governour, went back to -or.
诺曼人占领英格兰后,拼写改成了-our结尾,为的是与法语拼写统一。文艺复兴以后,新的拉丁语外来词开始出现,沿用了源语言中-or结尾的方式。很多以-our结尾的词,像chancellour和governour,恢复成了-or结尾。
