Stealth dorm refers to a home zoned as a single-family residence but rented by a group of unrelated individuals, particularly college students.
Landlords and students call them "mini-dorms" or "duplex-style dorms." Critics call them "stealth dorms."
Whatever phrase you use, single-family homes being converted into five- or six-bedroom off-campus student housing properties have been gaining popularity because of their community nature and close proximity to campus.
Some mini-dorms may be less expensive than the alternatives – one University of California-Berkeley student is paying just $540 per month for his bed in an 11-bedroom house, it reported.
But stealth dorms have been the target of neighborhood protesters, who don't like the added strain on traffic, additional cars parked at these houses and the noise and garbage that can come from students.
One of the most organized efforts during the past year occurred in Austin, where an initiative called "Stop Stealth Dorms," consisting of members primarily from neighborhoods just north of Texas campus, persuaded the Austin City Council to reduce the number of unrelated people living in a single-family home from six to four in March.
